The objective of this research project is to investigate the development of multi provider, multi service access networks based on Ethernet as a way to promote the use of new service paradigms. It will built on previous work done extending AAA proposal for neutral access networks, which is based on the Generic AAA model defined by the RFCs 2903, 2904, 2905 and 2906. Euskaltel SA and SATEC SA have both demonstrated interest in this work.
After conducting experiments with virtualized systems and networks and limited laboratory experimentation, this advanced routing and switching infrastructure constitutes the next step. It will be deployed over the UPV/EHU network with connections to I2Basque (Basque Country NREN) and RedIRIS (Spanish NREN). The requested equipment support the OpenFlow protocol. The infrastructure will allow virtualization of the experiments and will constitute the core of the EHU OpenFlow Enabled Research Facility, which is the local FIRE facility which succeeds to IkerNETW layer 2 experimental network developed in Future Internet Reseach Project.

Proyecto de Investigación Estratégica Future Internet (IE08-227)
This strategic project funded by the Basque Government has been on of the first devoted to this topic in the country. The work has been divided in several topics; I-Media, Internet of Things, Service Infrastructures, Network Infrastructure, Security and Experimental platform. The research group has been involved in the deployment of an experimental facility (IkerNETW) that has connected several partners with an overlay network able to support Layer 2 experiments.
Mecanismos de acceso a redes corporativas IPv6 desde entornos domésticos IPv4
When an organization with many remote users working from their homes, as proposed by an education system with many online resources, makes a transition to IPv6, it should study the mechanisms necessary to ensure connectivity to it from the home networks which are still mainly IPv4 based. This project will study the various technologies available to accomplish this and propose a mechanism manageable from the company (or organization) to provide remote users the benefits of IPv6 connectivity. The project will start with a IPv6-only scenario on the corporate network.
Pasito (Plataforma de Análisis de Servicios de Telecomunicaciones)
This project funded by the Spanish Secretariat for the Telecommunications and Information Society of the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Industry and run by RedIRIS, gathers 12 research groups in the area of advanced networking and has deployed a layer 2 experimental network in which experiments have been run. Work done by the research group are done in the Ethernet Authentication and Authorization field.
Proyecto CENIT: TIMI Transporte Inteligente de Mercancias Intermodal
The TIMI, Intermodal Freight Intelligent Transport " arises in a scenario motivated by a wish to encourage security and sustainable intermodal freight transport in different media (land and overseas) through improving the existing knowledge and creating new models of control, management, security planning, technologies implementation and methodologies for developing an intelligent intermodal transport in a global environment. Work of research lab has been centered on the ship to shore communications over WiFi, WiMAX, 3G and Satellite communications through the development of a multitechnology router which proposes the use of Network Mobility though HIP.
C@R “Collaboration @ Rural: A collaborative platform for working and living in rural areas” (FP6-2004-IST-5 IP)
There are many barriers that hinder rural development; the more severe ones include the lack of telecom infrastructures, hard environmental conditions, usability restrictions, lack of ICT literacy, difficulties on the introduction acceptance of new work methods... Barriers are also related to heterogeneity of policies, cultural aspects and working methodologies. C@R’s objective was to remove these barriers in order to improve rural development in an effective and harmonised way. The research group work has been centered in the AAA aspects of on-demand generated cooperative work supporting tools, for which a kerberos based approach has been followed.

PlaNetS ws a new Medea+ project which contributed to the overall goal of eEurope 2005, to provide cost effective broadband access to all European citizens. The broadband access was to based on a converged network unifying the current heterogeneous networks. The subscriber line is expected to be based on DSL and WiMAX technologies. PlaNetS concentrated on implementation and verification of DSLAMs, HomeGateways and MediaServers. The next version of the Internet Protocol IPv6 will play a key role in the converged network. PlaNetS supported an IPv6 end-to-end solution. Requirements for the platforms developed in PlaNetS were be taken from the FP6 Integrated projects MUSE (public network) and MediaNet (private network). PlaNetS builds up on the results of the former Medea+ projects UniAccess and UniLAN. Research group tasks were targeted to the 802.1x authenticator implementation for the DSLAM and a novel dual variant of it.

EthSEC research work's target was to offer an end-2-end security at the layer 2 level. For this a mechanism to stablish a security association between the two end nodes and a ciphering solution thiruh the use of an FPGA was designed.
